Appearance

Kaylee looks like the girl next door: light brown hair, brown eyes, medium height and build. She is pretty, but in a very unconscious way, making her grooming choices more for comfort or utility than in an effort to impress. Her default expression is a smile, utterly genuine and utterly friendly. She wears her heart on her sleeve as it were; any shift in mood is visible in her expression, as though the idea of obfuscating never crosses her mind. She typically wears either comfortable, loose-fitting trousers, work boots, and a shirt chosen to indulge her love of colour (all the better if it also displays flowers), or a mechanic's coveralls over the same. She dresses up only rarely, but favours frills when she does. She often bears smudges of grease on skin and clothing, and even when she makes a conscious effort to be tidy has a difficult time removing all traces from beneath her nails.

Personality

Kaylee is an optimist, able to find the good in nearly everything and everyone, and moreover certain that it's there to find. Her default state is one of energetic cheer, and while she can be knocked down, nothing yet has been able to keep her from it for long. She is genuinely sweet-natured, and has a knack for making friends swiftly. She has a capacity for deep devotion, expressed most clearly in her deep care for Serenity, her joy in her way of life, and the whole-hearted love she has for the rest of the crew. She takes insults to any of these things personally, though she is typically quick to forgive, not being particularly adept at holding a grudge. Conversely, those who share her passions are liable to find themselves with a quick and devoted friend. She will happily talk for hours about machines in general, Serenity in particular, and anything that happens to cross her mind if given half a chance.

Kaylee is open and honest, though it is a quirk of her nature rather than a particular devotion to truth; she's a poor liar, and rarely even thinks of subterfuge in her own dealings. She wears her heart on her sleeve: if she likes a person, they'll know it, and on the rare occasions she doesn't, they'll know that, too. She's a sensualist, taking great delight in those things she finds enjoyable: good food, good company, pretty objects, and sex. She's rather uninhibited, too, when it comes to the latter, as she sees no reason for shame in it; she will discuss the topic with frank and open interest, often to the chagrin of those around her. She doesn't see anything wrong with the lives the crew of Serenity lead, and approaches tasks both legal and illegal with the same cheer and determination. She is not a fan of violence, however, does not so much as go armed unless the situation is truly dire.

Kaylee is not without her sore points. She loves her life, but is aware that there are those who look down on it and on her. She is easily stung by scorn, all the worse if it comes from those who she'd like to respect her. One of her biggest sore spots, however, is her femininity. She is a brilliant mechanic, and many of those around her seem to see her only as such, reacting with surprise at best when she expresses interest in things considered more typically feminine. This is something that has a tendency to upset her deeply.

Abilities/Strengths

Kaylee has a nigh-supernatural degree of intuition and aptitude when it comes to machines. While she's had some training (she apprenticed under her father before joining up with Serenity), most of her ability is natural. She can puzzle out the workings of machines with which she's had no experience at a frightening rate. There are very few forms of mechanical failure she cannot diagnose or repair, though she does require the proper tools and parts for the latter (for example, in the Firefly episode 'Out of Gas', she was incapable of fixing the engine because the part she required had been massively deformed in an explosion). She has also been shown to be able to build, rebuild, or modify machines with access to the appropriate supplies (the ambulance transport in 'Ariel' and the intra-engine fermentation system she was said to have developed in 'Shindig' are the most notable canon examples). She also has a great deal of aptitude with electronics, having been shown to be able to reprogram devices or bypass security measures with relative ease.

In the personal arena, Kaylee's greatest strength is a combination of adaptability and native optimism. She takes what life hands her and makes the best of it, all with a sunny smile and nigh-indomitable degree of cheer.

Weaknesses

Weaknesses: Kaylee does not do well with violence. It doesn't come naturally to her, and when she finds herself in a combat situation, she is liable to freeze rather than act. The reason for this is two-fold: she has a deep and honest fear of injury, and she has a hard time actually bringing herself to deliberately harm another person. While she can accept that it's sometimes necessary, the idea of doing it herself, while something she can intellectually grasp, is alien to her on a fundamental level. Some of this carries over to things, as well; Kaylee is a creator, not a destroyer, and the idea of deliberate sabotage is one she finds alien as well. In the vein of combat, she is utterly human, and thus susceptible to injury as anyone else would be.

Kaylee's optimism can be something of a double-edged sword. She's inclined to see the best in people, and so can be fooled by a friendly face, not recognizing duplicity until it's too late.

Notable Possessions: A tiny screwdriver she habitually carries in one pocket. Her tool belt (rather standard fare for such things – wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, bolt cutters, a handful of nails, screws, nuts and bolts in varying sizes).
